Is Jesus God?

Jesus Christ

The short answer

Yes. Catholics believe Jesus Christ is true God and true man — the eternal Son of God who became human without ceasing to be God. He is one divine Person with two natures, divine and human.

The faith of the Church

The Nicene Creed confesses Jesus as "God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father." The Catechism summarizes: "Jesus Christ is true God and true man" (CCC 464).

What Scripture says

  • "The Word was God… and the Word became flesh" (John 1:1, 14).
  • "Before Abraham came to be, I AM" (John 8:58) — using the divine name revealed to Moses. His hearers picked up stones to kill him for blasphemy.
  • "My Lord and my God!" — Thomas to the risen Jesus, who accepts the confession (John 20:28).
  • "In him dwells the whole fullness of the deity bodily" (Colossians 2:9).
  • Jesus forgives sins (Mark 2:5-7), receives worship (Matthew 28:17), and claims authority over the Sabbath — all prerogatives of God.

One Person, two natures

The Council of Chalcedon (451) taught that Christ is one Person "in two natures, without confusion, change, division or separation" (CCC 467). He is not half God and half man, nor a man who became divine, but the eternal Son who took on a complete human nature — body, soul, mind and will.

Why it matters

Only God can save. If Jesus were only a great teacher, his death would be a tragedy, not a redemption. Because he is God made man, he can unite humanity to God. As the Fathers put it: he became what we are so that we might share in what he is.
