Did Jesus really rise from the dead?
The short answer
Yes. The Resurrection is the central truth of Christian faith: Jesus truly died and rose bodily on the third day. The empty tomb, the many appearances to his disciples, and the transformation of frightened followers into martyrs are powerful historical evidence for it.
Everything depends on it
"if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain" (1 Corinthians 15:17). The Resurrection is "the crowning truth of our faith in Christ" (CCC 638). Christianity is not first a set of ideas but a claim about an event in history.
The earliest testimony
Around A.D. 55, Paul passed on a creed he had received, probably within a few years of the crucifixion: Christ died, was buried, rose on the third day, and appeared to Peter, the Twelve, "more than five hundred brothers at once," James, and finally Paul (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). Paul notes that most of those witnesses were still alive — inviting verification.
Lines of evidence
- The empty tomb. The tomb's location was known; enemies never produced the body. Their counter-story — the disciples stole it (Matthew 28:13) — concedes the tomb was empty.
- Women as first witnesses. In that culture women's testimony carried little legal weight. A fabricated story would not have made them the first witnesses.
- The appearances. Individuals and groups, believers and skeptics (Thomas, James, Paul), testified to meeting Jesus alive — eating, speaking, and being touched (Luke 24:39-43).
- Transformed lives. Disciples who fled at the arrest became bold preachers who suffered and died rather than deny what they had seen.
A real body, transformed
The risen Jesus was not a ghost or a resuscitated corpse. His body was real yet glorified — no longer bound by space and time (CCC 645-646).
What it means for us
"Christ's Resurrection… is the principle and source of our future resurrection" (CCC 655). Death does not have the last word.
