Why be Catholic?

The Church

The short answer

Catholics believe the Catholic Church is the Church Jesus founded on the apostles, where the fullness of Christian faith is found — Scripture and Tradition, all seven sacraments, the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and an unbroken line of teachers reaching back to Peter.

Because of who founded it

Jesus did not leave behind only a book or a set of ideas. He chose apostles, gave Peter a unique role, and promised that his Church would endure: "the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18). Catholics believe this Church "subsists in" the Catholic Church, governed by the successor of Peter and the bishops in communion with him (CCC 816).

Because of the Eucharist

At the centre of Catholic life is not a sermon or a song but a Person. Catholics believe Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist and can be received at every Mass (John 6:53-58). For many converts, this is the reason above all others.

Because of the fullness of the faith

Other Christians share much that is true and holy (CCC 819). The Catholic Church offers that same Christ together with:

  • all seven sacraments, including confession and anointing of the sick;
  • two thousand years of saints, mystics and teachers;
  • a clear teaching authority that can settle disputed questions;
  • a worldwide family of over a billion people in every culture.

Because it is not only for the perfect

The Church has always been full of sinners — beginning with the apostles. Being Catholic is not a claim to be better than others but an admission that we need grace, mercy and community. Confession exists because Catholics fail.

Because truth matters

Ultimately, the reason to be Catholic is the same as the reason to believe anything: because it is true. The best way to test that claim is to come and see — attend Mass, read the Gospels, ask hard questions, and speak to a priest.
