Moral Life
Catholic morality is not a list of rules but a path to happiness — life in Christ, shaped by the Commandments, the Beatitudes and the virtues. Start here with sin, conscience and grace.

What is the difference between mortal and venial sin?
A mortal sin is a grave matter committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent; it destroys charity in the heart and must be confessed. A venial sin is less serious — either the matter is lesser or knowledge or consent is incomplete. It wounds but does not destroy our friendship with God.

What does the Catholic Church teach about abortion?
The Church teaches that human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception, so direct abortion is gravely wrong. At the same time the Church offers mercy and healing to anyone who has been involved in an abortion, and calls Christians to support mothers and families in practical ways.
What does the Church teach about euthanasia and assisted suicide?
The Church teaches that intentionally causing a person's death — by euthanasia or assisted suicide — is gravely wrong, whatever the motive. But it does not require burdensome treatment to prolong life at all costs: patients may refuse disproportionate treatment, and pain relief is good and right even if it may shorten life.
What is conscience, and must I always follow it?
Conscience is the inner judgement of reason by which we recognize whether an act is good or evil. We must always follow a certain conscience — but we also have a duty to form it well, through Scripture, Church teaching, prayer and wise counsel, because a conscience can be mistaken.
What is Catholic social teaching?
Catholic social teaching is the Church's body of teaching on how to build a just society. Its key principles include the dignity of every human person, the common good, solidarity, subsidiarity, care for the poor and vulnerable, the rights of workers, and care for creation.
How can I defend the Church's teaching on homosexuality?
People with same-sex attraction are called to chastity, as everyone is. The Church holds that the inclination is disordered and that acting on it offends God, though the desires themselves are not sins. Far from excluding anyone, the Church insists such persons be treated with respect, compassion and sensitivity.
How is NFP different from the sin of Onan?
Onan's sin was deliberately making the marital act sterile. NFP never makes any act sterile — every act stays open to the possibility of new life. It simply regulates pregnancy by abstaining during the woman's fertile time.
Aren't pro-life Catholics who support a war being hypocritical?
No. War can sometimes be morally justified, so Catholics may disagree about whether a particular war is just. Abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem-cell research and human cloning can never be justified, because they always involve the illegitimate killing of innocent human beings.
Is hunting for sport okay?
Yes. God gave man stewardship over animals for just purposes, and man must not make them suffer or die needlessly. Responsible sport hunting — for food and skins, for wildlife management, or for the skill of the hunt — does not violate that. The Church does not oppose it.
Should Robin Hood be considered a hero, given that he stole?
In the story, Robin Hood was reclaiming goods the crown had unjustly taken from the poor through unjust taxation and returning them. The Catechism teaches there is no theft when refusal would be contrary to reason and the universal destination of goods.
Are marital relations not supposed to be pleasurable, since they are for reproduction?
Husband and wife are meant to enjoy marital relations. Pleasure is not itself a purpose of sex, but it helps fulfill its purposes — procreation and spousal unity. The problem arises only when pleasure is put above or in place of those purposes.
Would it be wrong to sign up for health insurance that covers abortion?
No. Your intention is to pay for medical coverage for yourself and your family, not for abortion or sterilization. If you can find comparable coverage and rates from a company that does not cover them, that is better — though such a company is very hard to find today.
If a Christian denies the faith under torture, is that apostasy?
Objectively, totally repudiating the faith is apostasy, a grave matter. But torture can impair the ability to choose freely, and a mortal sin requires full knowledge and deliberate consent. Such a person has not shown a martyr's heroic virtue, yet may not be culpable of apostasy.
Is the right to marry a person of the same sex a civil right?
No. Natural law — the sense of good and evil written on every heart — shows that not every kind of behavior is a right. Genital relations between two people of the same sex violate the nature of who they are to one another. Acceptance of such "marriage" has come through the volume of propaganda and the habit of putting feelings before reason, not through rational argument.
Is it judgmental to point out someone's error?
No. Pointing out the truth is not judgmental. Neither is assessing whether actions are sinful, reacting with distaste to objective evil, or remembering past harm by someone you have forgiven. What we must avoid is rash judgment — by interpreting others as favorably as possible.
Does the Church teach it is better to die than to be raped?
No. The Catechism says rape can wound a victim's "moral integrity," meaning wholeness — not that the victim sins. The perpetrator, not the victim, has sinned, because morality lies in the act of the will. Saints like Maria Goretti are honored for resisting, but that does not imply others were sinful. Victims must be treated with profound compassion.
What is the correct list of the Ten Commandments?
The commandments in Deuteronomy 5 and Exodus 20 seem to number more than ten, so their division isn't perfectly clear. The traditional Catholic numbering is correct; in it, the prohibition of idolatry is not dropped but included in the first commandment.
Do I tithe 10 percent of my gross or net income?
Neither is required. The tithe bound only the Jews under the Mosaic law, which Jesus fulfilled. Christians are obliged to support the Church, but no percentage is set: decide how much to give and give it freely and cheerfully.
Can homologous artificial insemination be permitted as a treatment for male infertility?
Generally no. Homologous insemination and fertilization, using only the spouses, are less reprehensible than donor techniques but remain morally unacceptable, because they separate the sexual act from the procreative act. The exception is a technical means that helps the marital act achieve its purpose rather than replacing it.
Should I leave the Church because of my homosexuality?
No. "Homosexual" is not your identity: you are a Catholic with same-sex attractions, and the Church is not against you. Everything, starting with existence itself, is God's gift — including the crosses that let us grow in love for him. You have a special place in the Church.
Must I give money to panhandlers?
No. There is no obligation to give money to panhandlers, especially those who don't appear to need it or who might waste it. If you support the Church and give to reputable charities, you can gently decline without qualms — and offer shelter information instead.
When does gossip become a mortal sin?
Unless the matter is common news, gossip that lowers someone's opinion of a third person is a grave action. Done with full knowledge and deliberate consent, it becomes a mortal sin. Gossip is far more serious than most of us like to admit.
Is there an actual quote from John Paul II saying life begins at conception?
Yes. In Evangelium Vitae 60, John Paul II rejects the claim that the result of conception is not yet a personal human life, quoting the Church's teaching that "from the time that the ovum is fertilized, a life is begun which is neither that of the father nor the mother; it is rather the life of a new human being with his own growth."
Is it okay to stop tithing if my pastor won't discuss contraception in RCIA?
Yes, you are within your rights. Catholics must support the Church, but not necessarily a particular part of it that is failing in its duty. You might give that money instead to a Catholic organization that stands firmly against abortion and contraception, and tell your pastor why.
What are some examples of venial sins?
The Catechism describes two kinds: sins in a less serious matter, such as hatred that wishes someone only minor evil or abusive language without grave circumstances; and grave matter without full knowledge or consent, such as masturbation when culpability is lessened by immaturity, habit or anxiety.
Does God want us to be wealthy?
No. Jesus told a rich young man to sell what he had and give to the poor, and said it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for the rich to enter God's kingdom. The Gospels show God's favor focused on the poor; the "gospel of the full stomach" is not the gospel of Jesus.
What guidelines did John Paul II offer for preventing illegal immigration?
The document usually meant is his message of July 25, 1995, "The Church and Illegal Immigration." Its full text is available from EWTN, and Jimmy Akin has written about it.
Can a Catholic believe the U.S. was justified in dropping atomic bombs on Japan?
It is problematic. The Catechism condemns every act of war aimed at the indiscriminate destruction of whole cities and their inhabitants. In just-war teaching the acts of war, not only the cause, must be just; destroying civilian populations and terrorizing them into surrender, as at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, are unjust acts of war.
Did Fulton Sheen take a permissive stand on contraception?
No. There is no substantive evidence he rejected the Church's teaching; he defended it before and after Humanae Vitae. In his 1969 interview with David Frost he called it "the law," while expressing sympathy for those who struggle, and his books Three to Get Married and The World's First Love firmly oppose contraception.
What is liberation theology?
A movement begun in Latin America in the late 1960s that stressed the Gospel as liberation from earthly poverty and oppression, with little or no emphasis on liberation from sin. Its main problem: Jesus cared for the poor, but came above all to save humanity from sin.
Why is living together wrong if we're committed to chastity?
Even if you remain chaste, living together gives scandal — leading others toward sin. Saving money is good, but there are other ways: a same-sex roommate, or living with your parents until the wedding. It isn't worth the dishonor to your parents or compromising your commitment to Christ.
What is the sin of presumption?
Presumption is relying on God's mercy and power in a disordered way — hoping for salvation without doing anything for it, or for pardon without repenting. Deciding to sin because one can be forgiven is to sin twice: it uses God and makes light of his Passion.
Why only ten commandments?
Because the Ten Commandments are a synthesis of the natural law. Other sins are classified by moral theologians under the existing commandments — most of those you might add would fall under commandments four to ten, which concern how we treat others.
Is it sinful to deny Christ under threat of death?
We are called never to betray our loyalty to Christ and his Church, even under torture or death. But an acceptance coerced under duress is considered null by most civilized societies, and only God knows how culpable someone is who breaks under such pressure.
How can the Church call homosexuality unnatural when animals show homosexual behavior?
Natural law applies to creatures that can reason: as Aquinas says, it is the rational creature's participation in the eternal law. Animal behavior is no guide — many animals also eat their young.
Does the Church allow birth control in certain circumstances?
Contraception, never: any act intended to render procreation impossible is intrinsically evil. But spouses may, for just reasons and without selfishness, space births by moral means, following objective criteria and practicing married chastity.
May we use birth control to avoid a difficult pregnancy?
No. However hard a pregnancy may be, deliberately interrupting the conjugal act by contraception is never justified; Humanae Vitae teaches it is never lawful to do evil that good may come. If you need to avoid pregnancy, look into Natural Family Planning.
When does communicating information turn into gossip?
A good rule of thumb: don't say anything about someone that you wouldn't want said about you.
Why does the Church say it's acceptable to be a patriot as well as a Christian?
Patriotism isn't opposed to Christianity. We don't worship our country any more than we worship the people we love. God comes first, but that doesn't mean nothing can come second or third: render to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.
Isn't the Church's teaching on IVF unfair to couples who can't conceive?
It may seem cruel, but it is not unfair: a child is a gift, not an entitlement. Marriage gives the right to the natural acts ordered to procreation, not a right to a child. A child has the right to be the fruit of his parents' conjugal love, and IVF separates the procreative act from the sexual act.
Is lying a sin if done to protect someone from death?
The right to the truth is not unconditional, and no one must reveal the truth to someone without a right to it — such as a would-be murderer seeking his victims. One should try to avoid lying directly, but fear for the innocent and unjust pressure could lessen culpability if one slips into a lie.
Should there be laws protecting homosexuals from workplace discrimination?
Real injustice should be corrected. If homosexual persons are being unjustly discriminated against at work, society may rightly correct that injustice through legislation.
What does "Honor your father and your mother" mean if parents are abusive?
Children owe obedience to parents "in the Lord," in what is for their good or the family's, but must never obey an order their conscience judges morally wrong. Obedience ends when children become independent; respect is always owed.
The Catechism forbids mutilation, so why is non-therapeutic circumcision allowed?
Mutilation alters the body for non-therapeutic reasons in ways that impair its functioning. God himself established circumcision as the sign of the Old Covenant, so it cannot be intrinsically immoral mutilation. Parents may still decline it in conscience, without disparaging those who choose it.
Is a Magic 8 Ball just a toy, or a divination tool?
Unless someone uses it deliberately to divine the future, a Magic 8 Ball is a toy, like a folded-paper fortune-teller. It is not in the same league as the Ouija board, a known divination tool misleadingly sold to children as a game.
Is my friend's ability to see the past and future sinful?
Not in itself; we are not culpable for what we do not will. It becomes a problem only if he deliberately seeks such knowledge through occult means or puts groundless faith in occult phenomena. It might be a form of private revelation; he should be discreet and seek a sound confessor or spiritual director.
Should Catholics say "good luck"?
Yes. Most people mean "good luck" simply as a wish for good fortune, and a Catholic can use it in that sense.
What is the difference between suicide to end suffering and martyrdom?
The difference, a major one, is motive. One who takes his own life is centered entirely on himself; one who spends himself preaching the gospel until martyred is centered entirely on Christ.
Where does the Bible say abortion is wrong?
The word "abortion" is not in the Bible, but Scripture, together with natural law, reason, Church teaching and the Fathers, shows it is intrinsically evil. Scripture treats the child in the womb as a living person from conception, and to kill that living child is murder.
Since the Church hasn't defined when ensoulment occurs, are abortion and embryo research acceptable?
No. Differing opinions on when the soul is infused never created doubt that abortion is gravely wrong. And since a human person may be present from conception, even the probability suffices to forbid killing an embryo absolutely. The human being must be respected as a person from conception.
Is marital intercourse sinful if the spouses do it with lust for each other?
Sexual desire for and enjoyment of one's spouse is good and part of God's design. "Lust" in the Church's sense means seeking sexual pleasure in another solely for oneself, without regard for the other. Using one's spouse as an object of pleasure is gravely sinful.
If I said something false, realized it, and took it back, did I lie?
No. Lying requires the intention to deceive. If you believed you were telling the truth and corrected yourself when you learned otherwise, there is no lie and no sin.
Am I required to have a large family?
No. Family size itself is not a moral issue; openness to children and responsible family planning are. Large families are a sign of blessing and generosity, but couples may space births for just reasons, provided their motive is not selfish.
If sex is good for us, why is the Church so hostile to it?
The Church is not hostile to sex; it has the highest understanding of it. Intercourse expresses the total, lifelong self-giving of the marriage vows. Masturbation contradicts that purpose: it gives nothing to anyone and takes pleasure for oneself alone.
Are distinctions like these just legalism?
No. Treating an ectopic pregnancy, where the fetus cannot survive, differs from removing a viable fetus, which deliberately kills an innocent human; the end never justifies the means. An annulment finds no valid marriage existed. Praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet does not oppose seeking mercy in other ways. Understood, these are reasonable.
Is it a sin to put oneself deliberately in situations where one is likely to sin?
A near occasion of sin is not itself a sin but a situation of temptation. Entering one without sufficient cause is imprudent but not always sinful. Entering it in the hope of sinning is already a sin, because sin begins in the will.
My cousin lives with her lesbian partner. Am I a bigot for feeling uncomfortable around them?
No. They are acting in a way you know offends God, so discomfort is natural, and it is right to judge behavior. The Church calls us to accept such persons with respect, compassion and sensitivity, but teaches that homosexual acts can never be approved.
How can we be more accepting of gay people?
Accepting sinful behavior does no one good; naming sin rejects evil, not the person, and we owe each other the truth. Jesus accepted and loved repentant sinners but never sin. Like him, we show love by accepting our crosses, including same-sex attraction, and helping others carry theirs.
Who said, "Love the sinner, hate the sin"?
It comes from St. Augustine. His Letter 211 (about 424) has the phrase *Cum dilectione hominum et odio vitiorum*, roughly "with love for mankind and hatred of sins."
My husband's affair resulted in a pregnancy. Should I consider it a blessing?
The pregnancy is a blessing for the baby, but certainly not for you. Turn to the crucifix and the Lord's Passion: Jesus knows betrayal and loves you. Difficulty trusting your husband is normal, not self-pity. Meditating daily on the Passion and drawing near the Eucharist will bring peace and the ability to forgive.
Is it possible to be Catholic and a bodybuilder?
The Church favors keeping healthy, but obsessing over any one part of ourselves neglects the rest. Bodybuilding is not a vocation; too much attention to the body makes a kind of god of it. Eat well and exercise for health, and give the extra time to meditating on Christ's Passion.
Is it a sin for a married woman to flirt?
Flirting between unmarried people, or between spouses, is not a sin. Between a married person and someone other than the spouse, it is. Such attention belongs to one's husband alone.
If my fiancé stays overnight in a spare room a few nights a week, is that cohabitation?
Not in the usual sense, which means living together as husband and wife without being married. Hosting him in a spare room is not sinful in itself, but it can be a near occasion of sin and a possible cause of scandal.
Can I accept medical treatment that will impair my fertility?
Yes, you may follow your doctor's advice. Legitimate treatment needed to heal the body is not contrary to Church teaching, even if infertility is a foreseeable result, provided it is not directly intended.
What is wrong with the book *A Course in Miracles*?
Avoid it. It is New Age thought in Christian trappings, teaching that everything is relative, that there are no absolutes, and that Jesus is one of many enlightened masters.
Breastfeeding makes it impossible to read the signs of fertility. What do we do?
If NFP is unreliable for any reason, abstinence may be the only moral way to regulate births. But some ways of breastfeeding generally give the mother an extended period of infertility; consult an NFP expert.
Is masturbation a grave sin?
Yes. Masturbation is a grave sin at any age, even when hormones may be "raging."
Was it right for Lot to offer his daughters to be raped?
No. To protect his guests, Lot chose to commit one evil to avoid another, and one may never do evil so that good may come of it (CCC 1789). Commentators agree he cannot be praised.
Why is pornography a sin?
It gravely offends chastity, which honors the true meaning and intimacy of sexual union. Pornography perverts the conjugal act and gravely injures the dignity of everyone involved, making each an object of base pleasure and illicit profit (CCC 2354).
Can we use contraception for medical reasons?
No. Spouses' deliberate use of contraception to prevent pregnancy is never licit (CCC 2399). One may sometimes tolerate a lesser evil, but never do evil that good may come of it, even for the gravest reasons.
What reasons justify avoiding pregnancy?
The Church does not list "just reasons"; the couple must judge, making sure they are not motivated by selfishness. Church documents point to physical or psychological conditions of the spouses and external circumstances, and ask couples to decide prayerfully, in conscience formed by God's law and the Church's teaching.
Was it wrong for a mother to abort one triplet to save her life and the other two?
Yes. She had another choice, the only right one: to abort none and put the matter in the Lord's hands. He is never outdone in generosity.
Is it right to be proud of some things?
Theologically, pride is an excessive love of oneself. In the everyday sense of satisfaction in what reflects well on us, justified and moderate pride is not wrong, but cultivating gratitude is better, since it fosters humility.
How can I live as an intersex person when so many people label me?
Yours is an unusual cross, and you very definitely have a place in the Church. Make the best of your situation; if others are dissatisfied, that is their problem. What matters most is remaining chaste and faithful to the Lord.
Is it wrong for law enforcement to use clairvoyants to solve crimes?
Information given supernaturally to someone who did not seek it may generally be used for others' benefit with just cause, such as solving a crime. But deliberately seeking occult contact, or hiring someone to, is forbidden (CCC 2116), so agencies should not hire "psychic detectives."
My brother wants to "marry" another man and adopt children. What do I do?
It comes down to how much we love the Lord. If you loved a married woman, would you choose her over obeying God, or God over her? He chose nothing over us and gave himself to the point of dying. That is the conversation to have with your brother.
How does the Church define coveting?
Coveting is not enjoying the sight of things we like. It is an inordinate attachment to things, an obsession with having, which makes a god of them; Scripture calls such greed idolatry. We may buy what we need and some extras, with moderation, generosity and God first.
Can a pregnant woman undergo chemotherapy if it will harm her child?
Yes. The principle of double effect can apply. With a cancer as serious as stage four, often terminal, she could still use the treatment. St. Gianna Beretta Molla chose not to, but she could have.
