Why do Catholics pray to Mary?
The short answer
Catholics do not worship Mary; they ask her to pray for them, just as Christians ask one another for prayers. Because she is the Mother of Jesus and is alive in Christ, her intercession is powerful — as at Cana, where Jesus worked his first miracle at her request.
Asking, not worshipping
Catholic teaching sharply distinguishes worship (latria), given to God alone, from honour (dulia), given to the saints. Mary receives the highest honour (hyperdulia) because of her unique role, but it is still honour, not adoration (CCC 971).
"Pray to" in older English simply meant "ask." When Catholics say the Hail Mary, the request is explicit: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners."
Why ask anyone to pray for us?
"The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful" (James 5:16). Christians routinely ask fellow believers for prayer. The saints in heaven are more alive, not less, and are united to us in the one Body of Christ (CCC 956). Death does not divide the Church.
Why Mary especially?
- She is the Mother of the Lord. Elizabeth greets her as "the mother of my Lord" (Luke 1:43).
- Jesus acted at her word. At Cana she notices a need and brings it to her Son, and he performs his first sign (John 2:1-11).
- He gave her to us. From the cross: "Behold, your mother" (John 19:27). The Church sees in the beloved disciple every disciple.
- Scripture foretells it. "from now on will all ages call me blessed" (Luke 1:48).
The words of the Hail Mary come from the Bible
"Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you" is the angel Gabriel's greeting (Luke 1:28). "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb" is Elizabeth's (Luke 1:42). The second half is the Church's request for her prayers.
Mary always points to Jesus
Her last recorded words in the Gospels are, "Do whatever he tells you" (John 2:5). Every authentic Marian devotion leads there.
