Shouldn't the pope dress simply, like Jesus did?
The short answer
Jesus never wore a tuxedo either, yet no one questions the faith of a Christian who wears one on formal occasions. Commitment is shown by imitating Christ's holiness, not his clothing. The pope usually wears a simple cassock and zucchetto; his vestments signify his office and honor the occasion.
Clothes and holiness
If you wear a tuxedo on formal occasions, should your Christian commitment be questioned because Jesus never wore one? Our commitment is shown by imitating Christ's holiness, not by dressing as he did.
What the pope wears
Ordinarily the pope wears a simple robe called a cassock and a cap called a zucchetto. On special occasions, such as Mass, he wears a chasuble and a miter.
Why
These garments signify his status as Christ's vicar and honor the occasions, just as our clothes signify our state in life and honor the occasions we wear them for. If that is fine for ordinary Christians, it is fine for the pope.
