The SacramentsIntermediate

If I married a non-baptized person in a civil wedding, do I need an annulment to remarry?

The Sacraments

The short answer

Yes. Since neither of you was Catholic, no special permissions were required, so the Church presumes your marriage valid. Before attempting marriage again, you would need the marriage investigated for nullity; if it is found invalid, you would be free to marry.

Presumed valid

Neither you nor your wife was Catholic when you married, so no special permissions or dispensations applied. The Church therefore presumes the marriage is valid.

An annulment first

To attempt marriage again, you would first need the marriage investigated for nullity to establish that it was invalid. If it was, you should be free to marry.
