Grace

Latin gratia, "favour, free gift"

Definition

The free and undeserved help God gives us to respond to his call — above all, a share in God's own life.

The Catechism distinguishes sanctifying grace — a stable gift that heals the soul and makes it holy, received at Baptism — from actual graces, God's interventions at particular moments to help us act well (CCC 2000).

Grace is "participation in the life of God" (CCC 1997). Through it we become "in the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4).
