It comes from St. Augustine. His Letter 211 (about 424) has the phrase Cum dilectione hominum et odio vitiorum, roughly "with love for mankind and hatred of sins."

The saying goes back to St. Augustine. His Letter 211, written around 424, contains Cum dilectione hominum et odio vitiorum, roughly "with love for mankind and hatred of sins."

It became better known as "love the sinner but hate the sin," or "hate the sin and not the sinner," the form that appears in Mohandas Gandhi's 1929 autobiography.
