My husband's affair resulted in a pregnancy. Should I consider it a blessing?

Moral Life

The short answer

The pregnancy is a blessing for the baby, but certainly not for you. Turn to the crucifix and the Lord's Passion: Jesus knows betrayal and loves you. Difficulty trusting your husband is normal, not self-pity. Meditating daily on the Passion and drawing near the Eucharist will bring peace and the ability to forgive.

The pregnancy is a blessing for the baby, but certainly not for you. There is help.

Turn to the crucifix and the Lord's Passion. Our crucified Savior is the answer. He knows what it is to be betrayed: Judas betrayed him, Peter denied him three times, and the other apostles abandoned him to those who seized him. He gives you a share in his Passion. Be sure that Jesus knows your plight and loves you.

Finding it hard to trust a husband who betrayed you is not wallowing in self-pity; it is a normal reaction. The crucifix points to the Savior's boundless love, but the Eucharist is its living sign. The sight of his blood separated from his body on the altar can break one's heart if one lets it sink in. That will be your consolation; there is none greater.

Spend time each day going over his whole Passion in your mind, thanking him for each suffering. It will give you focus and perspective, and you will know his peace and become able to forgive your husband, and the priest as well.
