The SacramentsIntermediate

As a recent convert, how long must I wait before pursuing the priesthood?

The Sacraments

The short answer

It depends on the person. Former Orthodox priests may wait less; Anglican or Lutheran clergy may wait longer, especially if married; a layman follows much the same path as any Catholic layman, though he may be asked to live as a Catholic for several years first. Talk to your vocations director.

The waiting period depends on your situation:

  • An Orthodox priest entering the Church is already ordained and may wait less time before receiving faculties to celebrate the Catholic sacraments.
  • An Anglican or Lutheran clergyman may wait longer, for a dispensation from celibacy if he is married, and for ordination.
  • A layman with no clerical background goes through much the same process as any other Catholic layman, though recent converts may be asked to live the Catholic life for several years first, to make sure the conversion is not fleeting.

Speak with your diocese's vocations director, or, if you are drawn to a religious order, that order's vocations director, who will explain the requirements.
