The Our Father
The prayer Jesus himself taught his disciples — "the summary of the whole Gospel."
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
About this prayer
Tertullian called the Lord's Prayer "the summary of the whole Gospel" (CCC 2761). Its seven petitions move from God's glory (his name, kingdom, will) to our needs (bread, forgiveness, protection, deliverance). At Mass, the people continue after the priest's embolism with the doxology: "For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever."
