Purgatory
Latin purgare, "to cleanse"
Definition
The final purification of those who die in God's friendship but are not yet fully purified, before they enter heaven.
All in purgatory are assured of salvation. The Church's teaching was formulated especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent (CCC 1031). The faithful help them with prayers and above all the Eucharistic sacrifice.
